The Strangler's hood is a mask that you can get in the quest Hidden Lake. The hood is taken off a corpse and used to survive the spirit trying to kill you. When equipped in the head slot, the house by the lake is said to feel peaceful. Also, the hood cannot be removed after it has been equipped.
The Strangler's hood has limited use outside this mission, and is very dangerous to keep equipped. While the hood is equipped, the character gains superb tracking ability, and the 'Silence The Rasping Thing' attack. However, prolonged usage will result in your character dying from being strangled to death by the hood itself. The hood will require that the player kill a creature every 5 turns, or else the hood will kill the player.
The hood could be used to fight the Merga Wraith in older versions, because you would get a battle move of "Silence The Rasping Thing" which could kill any opponent immediately. As of v1.2.8 (or earlier), it performs a rather weak but intimidating attack.
The hood can be taken off by crafting it into strings and twine and rags, or taken from you (theft, surrender). This must be done before the 5th turn begins, since at the very beginning of the fifth turn, a status effect will be placed that guarantees the death of the player
The hood can be acquired safely through the use of a lit Giizhik Smudge Stick, as the use of the item will prevent the evil spirit from being able to harm the player, however equipping the hood will still have its negative effects.
