A medium chunk of meat is a larger portion of edible meat that can be harvested by butchering the corpse of a creature, by crafting it with any sharp edged tool. Medium chunks are a very nutritious kind of food, quickly solving hunger problems. Also, since they come from a larger game, there are plenty of them carved out of each corpse.

Meat can be eaten in any form, but it must be cooked first in order to avoid food poisoning. The meat can go rotten if left uncooked and/or unconsumed for a longer period of time, making it unsafe. Once it goes bad not even cooking will restore it to a consumable state. It takes about one day for a raw chunk of meat to get spoiled, as it degrades 5% condition per turn.

Characters with the Trapping skill have the ability to cure meat by combining it with a handful of ashes while cooking it. This allows the meat to stay edible much longer greatly lowering it's loss of condition over time. The drawback of this process is that eating cured meat lowers the hydration bar, making the character more thirsty.

Cooked meat degrades at half speed, 2.5% condition per turn, and cured meat is halved again to 1.25% per turn. Medium chunks of meat provide an immense boost to the nutrition bar, the same nutritional content as twelve cans of soup. One chunk also hydrates (or dehydrates if it's been cured) the same amount as one and a half bottles of water.

Consuming certain meats from unsavory sources may lead to unintended consequences.

Medium chunks of raw or cooked meat provides 48 points (~28.6%) of nutrition and 6 points (~8.3%) of hydration. Medium chunks of cured meat provide 48 points of nutrition and remove 6 points of hydration. Medium chunks of spoiled meat only provide 12 points (~7.2%) of nutrition.

Spoiled meat degrades much more slowly than other meat and can be useful as emergency rations with the help of antibiotics.
