The giizhik smudge stick is an item created by the Anishinabe people. It is available at the trading post in the ATN Enclave. Alternatively, it can be looted from the belongings of a fallen ATN warrior.
Traditionally a smudge stick is a bundle of dried herbs bound with string and are burned as part of a ceremony/ritual in some Native American tribes. A variety of herbs and other plant materials are used in a variety of different ceremonies and rituals, and the purpose of the items can vary from one culture to the next, however physical and spiritual healing seems to be a common purpose for these items.
The ATN giizhik stick serves as a protection against the influence of various evil spirits, and using a lit one will prevent player's character from being hurt by the entity at the house at the 7 Gables Road, or by Odo when going up the stairs at Saginaw. However, it cannot repel The Merga Wraith and it will still chase down the player if he unequipped the Bronze Talisman.
Lighting one while already being affected by the Strangler's Hood or the Wendigo Curse will cause a rather painful reaction. It should serve as a confirmation that the character is, in fact, affected by an evil supernatural affliction of some kind.
