This is a random encounter that can occur when the player has acted significantly more good than evil in previous random encounters.

Encounter[]

Gas stations have all been drained of their liquid gold. This one may have been empty before the crash, by the looks of it. Barely any working cars left to tell whether gas or fuel cells were the mainstay.

The pumps are still there, though. A man in a tattered, filthy suit is chained to the nearest one. Calls out to you to free him. Says they've left him like this. He's worried the crows will peck out his eyes, once they figure out he is immobile.

Pinned to his chest is a sign in big, visible letters: "Don't touch. Property of Martha's Army!"

You ask him what he did to upset them. "Had a trolley full of iSlabs. Was taking them to the market," he replies.

Peculiar tone of voice. Equal parts indignant, proud, and demanding. You get the feeling that he's trouble.

Choices[]

Unchain him. Might take a while as it doesn't look like you can pick the locks.[]

You try to unbind him, but he's been chained in such a manner that you can't get any purchase. Not without risking breaking bones in the man's body, anyway.

He makes it abundantly clear that you should release him "forthwith without any harm or disfigurement". There is an unspoken assumption of "or else".

Who talks like that out here? And you idly wonder what the heck "or else" could be when he's stuck here, chained to a gas pump.

In the end, you have to give up. Sometimes helping people just isn't in the cards.

Outcome:

  • Item(s): Nothing happens
  • Health: Nothing happens
  • Morality: Player receives +2 morality

Talk to him. Find out more about his situation. Help if it's warranted.[]

You try to talk to him. But the conversation isn't reassuring. Mostly threats. He knows people. They'll come after you. He's an important official in an enclave. Why aren't you helping him? His family has a long memory.

You say little, taking it all in. Eventually, you ask him if he'd like you to help.

A simple please would have sufficed. Maybe even a reply in the affirmative. But no. More threats.

Nothing but hassle, this one. As you leave, he viciously kicks out and catches you in the back of the knee. Caught off-balance, you fall heavily onto the ground.

You pick yourself up, the sign on his chest his only shield from your wrath. You hope that the limp isn't permanent.

Outcome:

  • Item(s): Nothing happens
  • Health: Player receives minor bruising (?% chance)*
  • Morality: Player receives +1 morality

Walk on. You don't want to mess with Martha's Army.[]

Nope. Not today. You only play hero on Fridays. Tough luck, guy.

Outcome:

  • Item(s): Nothing happens
  • Health: Nothing happens
  • Morality: Player receives -1 morality

Steal his shoes. He won't be needing them, and you could do with a pair.[]

You get to work on his shoes. His invective doesn't let up until you've stripped his feet bare. Hard to find decent shoes these days. All that's about are coarse-haired, hand-woven crap made out of varmint fur. Itch you to death.

These are manufactured from way back when. The synthetic fiber's still strong. Thanks, man.

Outcome:

  • Item(s): Player receives 1 pair of shoes
  • Health: Nothing happens
  • Morality: Player receives -2 morality
