Broken glass exists in two forms, broken bottles and shards. Shards are commonly used as a crafting material, due to their sharpness and ease with which they can be found. They can be used to make shivs, spears, and arrowheads.
All varieties of broken glass cause minor bleeding wounds and possible bruising, when used as a melee weapon. Their primary advantage over your fists in combat is the additional bloodloss, which NPCs can keep track of better than a player without Medic, reducing their morale. Their fragile nature means they will break after only a few hits.
Shards can be used as improvised melee weapons, although very fragile and posing the threat of wounding the user. Shards can be used to craft a shiv, which is less likely to hurt the person wielding it. Near ruins and the DMC sprawl, shards are often abundant enough to use as the sharp component in recipes instead of more valuable tools.
Broken bottles are sometimes better at warding off foes than actually damaging them since they have an extremely low durability; a single use in battle or crafting is enough to shatter them permanently (this is an exception to the usual way tools work in recipes). Shards degrade 25% per use, while shivs degrade 20% per use.

Trivia[]
Crafting shivs can be a good way to make money (and requires no special traits to do so). Shivs can yield more profit than whiskey bottles, broken bottles, and clothes with low durability.
